COVID - 19

Since March, 2020 Dr. Makokis has chaired an expert group of physicians working in Indigenous Nations alongside a Federal Minister and Assistant Deputy Minister.  They have met weekly to discuss COVID-19, primary care, Indigenous health and anti-Indigenous racism in the health system.  As a result of their advocacy, the first national anti-Indigenous racism summit was held in October, 2020 after the death of Joyce Echaquan.  The follow up meeting was held in January, 2021 and subsequent ones are planned for 2021.
